The Title should read “What do I need to start a small online business in New Zealand or NZ”
Here is my 9 jobs I would do first.
Here is a list of things I would set up sooner rather than later. In no particular order.
This is taking into account you have an idea and a business name in mind.
1, Buy your co.nz domain name 1 year should be around $20 NZD, they will try and sell you the moon, but really this is all you need to secure your domain name. https://www.crazydomains.co.nz/ and leave it until you are ready.
2, You could future proof your online presence, buy buying the .com address as well, this is up to you. I would always recommend it because you never know what the future holds. and its cheap.
I would recommend https://www.godaddy.com/, you should be able to get your first year for about $2 with a coupon then it will be $20 USD the year after. Try this coupon ( cjc99com ) if it doesn’t work just search the web for Godaddy Coupons 2019
3, Google Account – yourdomainname@gmail.com this will get you a youtube channel, email account, plus the main thing a Google Business Listing with Maps, huge for local businesses and will be a massive part of local business online in the future. You could also set up an abbreviated version for emails and then forward then to the above address. for example. yourDN@gmail.com might be easier when you are giving out your email address,
4, Facebook Page – setup a facebook page and or group
6, More Social Media -Instagram and Pinterest (Pinterest is great for traffic using pins so sure and Instagram is great for brand awareness
7, Trademarks here is the link for more information https://www.iponz.govt.nz/about-ip/trade-marks/
8, Set up your company. The setup is through the companies office. https://companies-register.companiesoffice.govt.nz/ costs about $50 each year.
9, This would be a great FB group to join https://www.facebook.com/groups/networknz/, you can ask loads of questions.
Hope this helps,
Steve
I feel i should elaborate on a couple of things.
The likes of Instagram etc all you need to do at the start is setup the brand name and then bank the account just in case you ever need it. This goes for all social media. I would however setup the Google My Business Listing once the google account is set up. So you can secure your brand name on Google my Business. Google will send you a post card with a number on it, to verify you a legit. Takes about 15 days to arrive. Google My Business is where you upload tons of photos and customer can write reviews etc and add their own photos. Let me know if you need any help.
If you are interested in following your dream and getting your business idea underway the best way to start is by getting yourself online and getting your product or service in front of your market.
